Deuteronomy 28:15–68 (KJV)

Deuteronomy 28 is one of the most sobering chapters in the Old Testament. After God lovingly lays out fourteen verses of blessing, the tone shifts dramatically:

“But it shall come to pass, if thou wilt not hearken unto the voice of the LORD thy God… that all these curses shall come upon thee, and overtake thee.”

— Deuteronomy 28:15, KJV

From verse 15 through 68—54 verses—God describes what happens when His people turn away from His voice, His ways, and His covenant. The curses touch every part of life:

• City and field
• Body and mind
• Marriage and family
• Harvest and finances
• Enemies and nations
• Hope and future

The long list isn’t written to crush us—it’s written to warn us. God is showing the devastating consequences of life lived outside of His protection and obedience.

THINK

1. God is serious about our obedience.

The length of the curses compared to the blessings is intentional. God wants us to feel the weight of drifting from Him. Disobedience is never harmless. It always leads somewhere.

2. The curses reveal what sin really does.

Sin steals, breaks, confuses, scatters, and destroys. Every curse in this chapter is simply the natural fruit of rebellion.

3. The curses highlight our need for Christ.

Deuteronomy 28 reminds us that we cannot save ourselves. Israel failed, and we fail too. Christ became a curse for us (Gal. 3:13) so that we could receive the blessing.

4. Blessing is found not in perfection, but in surrender.

The call isn’t “never fail” but “hearken diligently,” “walk in His ways,” and “love the Lord your God.” God wants our heart, not our performance.

5. This warning is an act of mercy.

God warns because He loves. It is mercy that God shows us the outcome of a life lived in rebellion—so we can turn before we ever reach that place.

CLOSING PRAYER

Lord, help me to hear Your voice. When I drift, pull me back. When I delay, give me courage to obey quickly. Thank You that through Christ the curse is broken, and blessing is available to all who walk in Your ways. Align my heart with Your Word today. Amen.
